W.B. Oerter is an Egyptologist, Coptologist and comparative religion scholar. He specializes in Coptology (with special focus on language and epigraphic sources), Coptic papyrology, Gnostic and Manichaean studies, and history of Egyptological research. Besides this, he also focuses on the evidence of Coptic settlement at the Memphite necropolis between the 3rd and the 10th century AD. W. Oerter is member of the editorial board of the Archiv orientální journal, member of the board of the International Association for Coptic Studies, member of the Deutsche Vereinigung für Religionswissenschaft and of the International Association of Manichaean Studies.
