Czech archaeologist and a Lecturer at the Czech Institute of Egyptology, Charles University in Prague and Department of Archaeology, University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. He studied in Prague and Bratislava (Czechoslovakia) and Sheffield. Since 1993 he organized several research and field projects, published several books and numerous academic papers. Since 1998 he lectured Prehistoric Archaeology and Archaeological Theory at University of Sheffield and Cambridge (UK), Pilsen, Hradec Kralove and Olomouc (CZ), Universite Paris 10 Nanterre (FR). In 2007 he was awarded the Ian Potter Research Fellowship at the Flinders University, Adelaide (South Australia). He has also been a visiting lecturer at Freien Universität in Berlin (GER), the University of Siena (IT); New Delhi (India) and American University in Rome (IT).
Jan Turek is specialist in the Neolithic and Chalcolithic of Europe and Mediterranean, especially in regards to the reconstruction of social and gender structure and symbolic systems of prehistoric communities. This includes an interest in continuity and change in funerary practices, settlement pattern and artefacts, including the Egyptian Old Kingdom pottery.
In 2008 he was elected Senior representative of the World Archaeological Congress Council. Since 2013 he is Editor-in-Chief of Archaeologies, Journal of the World Archaeological Congress (Springer U.S.A, ISSN 1555-8622).
