The project will finance the activities of the Czech Institute of Egyptology, Faculty of Arts, Charles University, in the years 2005–2011, and guarantees the continuity of explorations on the Czech archaeological concession in Abusir, as well as the further development of Egyptological research in the Czech Republic. The project will also ensure that the CIE keeps the high international standard of Egyptological research, especially as far as the era of pyramid builders, and the Late Period are concerned (in which other cultural streams of the eastern Mediterranean permeated Egyptian culture).
The fieldwork in Egypt will be concentrated on the research of:
- the royal necropolis in the pyramid field
- non-royal tombs at the periphery of the pyramid field and at South Abusir
- large shaft tombs in the Western part of the Czech archaeological concession
- archaeological survey of the Abusir necropolis, with a special attention paid to the hitherto unexplored Sun temples of the 5th dynasty.
The site of Abusir is planned to be opened to the public; reconstruction and restoration activities will be undertaken in cooperation with SCA (in the shaft tomb of Iufaa, the mastaba of Ptahshepses, and, if required by the SCA, in the shaft tomb of Udjahorresnet as well).
Besides the attention paid to the excavations and the archaeological materials, collected during the fieldwork in Egypt, this research project also includes other important tasks, pertaining to the:
- application of modern methods of linguistics in the study of the Egyptian language
- the examination of various types of Egyptian writing and compiling of palaeographies
- application of the cultural anthropology methods in the study of ancient Egyptian society
- ancient Egyptian religion
- the development of scientific thought in ancient Egypt
- Egyptian art
- historical written documents and their analysis
- relations of Egypt and neighbouring countries
- material and cultural legacy of ancient Egypt
- the preservation of Egyptian cultural heritage.
The realization of the aforesaid tasks will enable the research team to carry out a complex and systematic research on the ancient Egyptian civilization. The collaboration with related social sciences, as well as with the disciplines of natural and technical sciences, also plays an important role. Of great importance will be the collaboration with the Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt on some urgent rescue projects in the Arab Republic of Egypt. The research plan also includes collaboration with other foreign archaeological institutes; some of these activities already make part of bilateral agreements.
Another priority of the project represents the application of new discoveries and scientific information in teaching. The popularization is enhanced as well. The CIE organizes public lectures, exhibitions, produces publications and scripts for film documents.
Besides the tasks connected directly to the Abusir fieldwork, other important up-to-date research issues are dealt with. Work on each research task (listed below sub I–IX) is coordinated by an experienced scholar.
