„Text Messages, Tablets, and Social Networks
in the Late Bronze Age Eastern Mediterranean“

Přednáška uskuteční v rámci mezinárodní konference The Crossroads II, or There and Back Again a to dne 16. září 2014 od 18:00 v místnosti č. 131 na hlavní budově FF UK.

Abstrakt: Despite covering thousands of square miles of often-rugged terrain, the Bronze Age Eastern Mediterranean was also a Small World, according to terminology used by Social Network analysts. Such a Small World is not physical but rather measured in cohesiveness and transitivity – for instance, the Bronze Age rulers all either knew each other directly or knew of each other, so that they were connected through one, two, or three degrees at most (e.g., the friend of my friend). In this paper, we will explore the cohesiveness of the social network that connected the Great Powers during the 14th to the 12th centuries BCE, primarily by concentrating on the archives found at Amarna and Ugarit. By the mid 14th century BCE, the evidence of the tablets implies that the rulers, merchants, and messengers of the day had already optimized the existing diplomatic, mercantile, and communication networks for maximum efficiency. By describing their relations as a social network, and not just as diplomatic or trade relationships, and by actually demonstrating the applicability of Social Network Analysis, we hope to present scholars with a means by which to see long-familiar data in a different way.

Diane Harris Cline je docentkou historie a klasické archeologie na George Washington University, specializující se na dějiny starověkého Řecka. V současné době se zaměřuje především na aplikaci analýzy společenských síťových diagramů na problematiku starověkého světa.

Eric H. Cline je profesorem klasické archeologie a antropologie na George Washington University a ředitelem GWU Capitol Archaeological Institute. Mezi jeho hlavní zájmy patří problematika mezinárodních vztahů Řecka, Egypta a Předního východu v pozdní době bronzové (asi 1600-1200 př. n. l.). Již více než 30 sezón aktivně působí na archeologických výzkumech v Izraeli (Tel Kabri, Megiddo), Egyptě, Jordánsku, Kypru, Řecku, na Krétě a ve Spojených státech amerických.
